SEA PERCH 2019
On March 1, the 5th Annual SW Wisconsin Regional High School Sea Perch (Underwater Robotics Challenge was Full Speed Ahead! Teams from SW Wisconsin like Richland Center and as far away as
Verona and Oregon competed this year with a focus on Mission: Rescue & Recovery based on the 2018 actual Rescue.
In 2018, the world watched closely as a group of students were trapped in a cave in Thailand due to rising water. This subterranean environment presented significant challenges for rescuers and
required a team approach to safely navigate the caves, address evolving environmental challenges, and ultimately rescue the students. This year's challenge included an engineering notebook, obstacle
course and the Mission Rescue & Recovery. Each team was to assist with navigating a narrow underwater cavern to transport important supplies and rescue an ROV that fell apart during an earlier
attempt at the course.
The Winning Teams this year are - 1st Place "Bubble Guppies" included Austin Kaszubski, Jacob Zorea and Hunter Smyth - 2nd Place "Boats & Bros." included Jeron Johnson, Isaac Morris and Jadon Koegel, both
two teams from RCHS. In years past, RCHS has competed at Nationals at LSU, Georgia Tech, Dartmouth. Zach Dray -- Physics/Science teacher from Richland Center High School and retired teachers
from Richland Center area along with Hope Mikkelson from Verona HS / friends and Herb Thomas, Ed Nowicki and Alan Kromonacker, Madison Navy Madison Navy League Council coordinated the event.

Sea Perch is an innovative underwater robotics program that instructs teacher and students to build underwater ROVs. The curriculum teaches science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM),
with a marine engineering theme, during the project students learn engineering concepts, problem-solving, team work and design skills. Students are exposed to possible careers in naval architecture
and marine/ocean engineering. As we know, the world is changing, with innovations transforming our nation, creating whole new industries and occupations. Most jobs in the future will require a
basic understanding of math and science. Science and technology careers exist in a culture on inspiration , discovery and innovation. The U.S. has fallen from third to seventeenth in the world in
the number of college graduates in engineering programs. In the U.S., only 5% of science degrees are awarded in engineering, as compared with 50% from China. It is estimated 400,000
engineers will be needed in the near future. If not addressed, the expected shortage of skilled workers could decrease our nation's competitiveness and result in a lack of expertise in mission critical
areas. These engineering jobs are good-paying professions and ones we should encourage our young people to strongly consider.
